Meat smokers are able to cook barbecue, turkey, and chicken just to name a few. These smokers are able to come in all forms, shapes and sizes and can vary widely in fuels as well as prices.

Meat smokers are available in a whole range of prices, from $50 to $10,000+. A small water smoker is recommended for those who are not interested in smoking meat regularly. These small water smokers are priced cheaper than other forms of smokers. If you enjoy smoking with these smokers, then perhaps you will find yourself interested in getting a larger, more expensive meat smoker.

There are a number of factors that you should consider when planning to purchase a meat smoker:

The first item that should be considered is the type of fuel. Meat smokers can run on several fuels including charcoal, electricity, hardwood, wood pellets, as well as propane. With each fuel choice, there come advantages and some subsequent disadvantages as well. Smokers which utilize either charcoal or wood provide an authentic taste to the food with the cheapest meat smokers being fueled by charcoal. However, although the smokers are cheaper, they tend to cost the most to use. Electric is more convenient and less expensive to run but do not have the same realistic flavor. Smokers which use pellets are powered through electricity but use the pellets in order to provide smoke thereby combining convenience with authentic flavors. Propane meat smokers are able to heat at a faster pace but they are typically more expensive to purchase. However, propane does not allow you to be as involved in the smoking process. Many people find the actual barbecuing to be enjoyable and therefore choose the more interactive charcoal or hardwood meat smokers.

The last item to consider is the name brand of the meat smoker. There are numerous brands of smokers which are on the market. Although there are many smoker brands which you may be not be aware, make sure that you thoroughly research each of these meat smokers as well as their companies before you decide on a unit. Several generic units that are sold today are made by the brands of specific stores and they do not include warranties or dealer service arrangements. Whenever you find a smoker which you are interested in, research that item thoroughly to see what consumers have to say about that unit. In addition, make sure that the unit comes with a dealer service agreement.

The second choice that needs to be made is the size of smoker which would suit your needs. The smallest of the meat smokers are able to produce a large amount of food for a substantial amount of people, usually up to 20 individuals. The largest meat smoker is able to provide a large amount of food to a large group of people for an entire day. Before making a choice as to the size of meat smoker which you prefer, you should consider how much barbecue you will be making at one time. A small meat smoker will most likely be sufficient for the average family as most people do not have frequent all day barbecues. However, if you often host large parties, the larger smokers would be best. In general, the average person consumes about 1 pound of meat. You should take this into consideration when choosing how much meat to prepare for your meal.

The third item which should be considered is smoker versatility. There are several smokers which are also able to grill foods. In most cases, this is ideal. The Big Green Egg, a charcoal smoker, is such a unit. Be wary of inexpensive units which claim both smoking and grilling capabilities as most of these units are not as efficient as they claim to be. The majority of these inexpensive units are capable of doing either smoking or grilling well but are not able to do both.

Add a little German accent to your next barbecue by grilling up some juicy bratwurst sausages alongside your more traditional hot dogs and hamburgers. Bratwurst, also known affectionately as brats, can be found at most grocery stores in either the deli case or already packaged in the meat department. If you’ve never had one, bratwurst are hearty sausages made from veal, pork or beef. They are well seasoned, but are not overly spicy. Don’t be surprised if the meaty, juicy bratwurst turns out to be more popular than the smaller hot dogs.

To serve brats at your own home or at your next tailgate, your first task will be picking out the perfect bratwurst for your grill. If you are lucky, your local grocery store will offer fresh brats in the deli case. If not, most stores carry different varieties of pre-packaged brats, including brats made with beer or filled with cheddar cheese.

If you have bought fresh bratwurst, pierce the skin several times, so that they won’t burst in cooking and squirt hot juices at you. There are two different schools of thought on the best way to cook fresh bratwurst. Some people prefer to grill their brats from start to finish, while others prefer to par-boil or simmer them in liquid first and then grill them.

If you prefer not to par-boil or simmer your links first, simply place your bratwurst on a pre-heated grill. Cook the brats over low heat for approximately 20 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned on the outside and cooked all the way through.

Many people prefer to par-boil or simmer their brats in beer before grilling them. Again, there are different schools of thoughts on the best method to do this. Some people simply pour two to three beers in a saucepan and boil the brats in the alcohol. Other people believe you should bring the beer to a boil, but then turn down the heat before adding the brats and slowly simmer the brats for about six to eight minutes. There are some cooks who recommend adding the beer to a skillet and simmering the brats in it for approximately ten minutes. Some people like to add onions to the beer for added flavor. Still others prefer not to use any beer and will pre-cook the brats in plain water.

Once you have pre-cooked the links, place the brats on a pre-heated grill. Cook the links over low heat for about ten minutes, turning them occasionally. The brats are done when both sides are browned and the links are cooked all the way through.

If you have bought the prepackaged brats, many of these are already fully cooked and just need some gentle grilling over low heat to warm them through.

You can serve brats in a regular hot dog roll, but they are better on a hoagie roll. Most of the time, brats are served topped with a hearty golden mustard and with lots of sauerkraut. Take a tip from Wisconsin where brats are extremely popular and are often serve with grilled corn on the cob as a side. French fries or potato chips are also perfect accompaniments for the hearty brats.

There are numerous ways to maximize your budget when planning your meals. Planning your meals ahead of time is the first step. When you plan ahead of time, you can limit your grocery trips to once a week which saves both time and money.

One of the best planning methods is to plan your meals based on the weekly sales fliers. Each week when the sales ads come out, browse the ads for specific items such as meat and produce. Meats and produce are generally the most expensive items in your meals, so plan around these. For example, if chicken breasts are on sale, plan a couple meals that week with chicken as the main ingredient.

When planning your menu, make a complete shopping list by looking at your recipes and evaluating what you need. Check your pantry for any canned or packaged goods your recipes for the week require. Make sure to include any refrigerated or freezer items you need to your shopping list and pick up all ingredients needed for the week in one shopping trip.

Stick to your list while you shop. Impulse items add up quickly, so resist the urge to add these extras to your cart. If you are familiar with the store, plan your list according to the store layout. This saves time in the store and time is money.

Stock up on items that you frequently use when they are on sale. This may include items such as soups, pasta, tomato sauce, and other items that are common to many of your recipes. You can create a master list of frequently used food items to look for each week. Building a pantry of basic food is a money saver since you can shop from your pantry when you need these items instead of paying full price if they aren’t on sale when you need them.

Having a meatless meal at least once a week is good on your shopping budget. There are numerous pasta, rice, bean, or vegetarian recipes that do not call for meat. Build a recipe file of these meatless meals as part of your budgeting process.

Buy less expensive cuts of meat and use them in soups, or cook in a slow cooker to tenderize them. Ground beef is cheaper in bulk so buy it on sale and divide up into smaller portions. Freeze what you don’t use that week to use at a later date.

Serve breakfast for dinner once a week. Pancakes, waffles, French toast, and omelets are less expensive than traditional dinner entrees.

Make your own mixes. Prepackaged mixes are expensive and you can easily make your own by using items you have in your pantry. You can make your own mixes for brownies, cakes and pancakes. Bake cookies from scratch rather than buying ready made from the bakery or using refrigerated dough. There are many cookbooks and websites dedicated to making your own mixes.

Check your local bakery for day old bread. Bread freezes well, so stock up your freezer with bread to use later.
Many stores or butchers offer a discount on meat that is close to its expiration date. Get to know when they normally mark this down and take advantage of this discount.

Clipping coupons can also maximize your budget. If your store offers double coupon days, take advantage of this. When you combine a coupon with a sale, you add to your savings. Only use coupons for items that you would normally buy. Don’t get carried away and buy something just because you have a coupon for it.

By taking 20-30 minutes each week to plan out your meals, you can save time and money. You will no longer be caught at the grocery store right before dinner time trying to decide what to eat or spending extra money on takeout.

A good steak is an all-American meal. Grilling a steak perfectly can be tricky. But it can be done.

Pick the right steak. A flavorful steak will be bright red with plenty of marbling throughout the meat. A cut like filet mignon has little marbling so it is less flavorful but more tender. There are three grades of steak; prime, choice and select. Most prime grade beef is bought by restaurants. Usually choice or select meat is found at retails stores. If you want prime meat you will need to find a good butcher shop.

Steak is cut from one of three sections on the cow. The front section is the rib, the middle is the short loin and the back is the sirloin. From the rib come rib-eye steaks, from the short loin comes the T-bone, porterhouse and tenderloin steaks. Sirloin and top sirloin come from the rear sirloin part.

A thick steak is better for the grill. A steak should be 1-inch to 2-inches thick. Don’t trim off all the fat. Fat is flavor. Steaks should be put on the grill at room temperature. This means they should be taken out of the fridge an hour before grilling. Rub your steaks with canola oil and a sprinkling of salt. Then grind fresh black pepper over them. A flavorful steak doesn’t need a lot of extra seasoning. Always use tongs instead of a fork. If you pierce the steak the flavorful juices will run out drying out the steak.

The grill should be hot and the grate should be rubbed with a piece of the steak fat that you cut away. Put the steaks on a hot grill and close the grill. Cook the first side and then flip the steak over to cook the second side. Check for doneness early to be sure you don’t overcook the steak.

The best way to test for doneness is to use the hand test. Raw meat feels like the fleshy part of your palm below your thumb, when you hand is relaxed. If you touch your thumb and first finger together and then use the other hand’s index finger to touch the spot on your palm below your thumb you will know what a rare steak should feel like. For medium rare touch your thumb to your middle finger, for medium use your ring finger and for well-done touch your thumb to your little finger. Once you get the hang of this and you don’t need a meat thermometer for grilling steaks.

One of the biggest mistakes in making a great steak is cutting right into it as soon as it comes off the grill. A steak needs to rest for a few minutes; 5minutes for a 1-inch thick steak and 10 minutes for a 2-inch thick steak. This one tip will make for much juicier steaks.

Grilling a perfect steak is a matter of choosing the right meet, preparing the grill, knowing how to check for doneness and letting it rest. The more times you practice grilling steaks the better they will be.

To maintain a healthy lifestyle eating a healthy diet may be the most important aspect. While exercise is also very important, eating a balanced diet that is full of vitamins is not only needed to maintain a healthy weight, but to keep the body working efficiently as well. While eating healthy requires discipline, and some sacrifice, there are several ways you can improve both your cooking and eating habits to ensure you are eating foods that are not only delicious, but nutritious as well.

The first tip in how to cook and eat healthier is to cook and consume plenty of lean meat. Lean meat is a building block in ensuring you are getting plenty of protein. Lean meats, including chicken, fish, or pork, should be the focal point of at least one meal per day. While these meats can seem bland and tasteless, there are several ways to improve the taste of the meat without sacrificing the food’s nutrition. Some of the best ways to improve the taste of the food is to use plenty of rubs and spices. However, be sure to avoid using a rub that contains too much salt or sugar, which could make the meal quite unhealthy. Furthermore, consuming lean meats that are organic will ensure that the meat has not been treated with additional hormones, which could potentially lead to health hazards.

The second tip in how to cook and eat healthier is to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are all natural foods that have always been at the center of a balanced diet. These foods are full of both vitamins in fiber. To ensure that you are getting the correct amount of fruits and vegetables, you could try to have at least one serving of fruits and vegetables with every meal. While many fruits and vegetables can be consumed without any preparation, further preparing the vegetables could make them more delicious. One of the best ways to prepare vegetables, without sacrificing any nutritional value, is to grill them. To improve the taste of the vegetables, you could season them with fat free oil, salt, and pepper. Be careful while grilling them as they do not take more than a few minutes to prepare.

The third tip in how to cook and eat healthier is to avoid complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates, which include those found in sugar, alcohol, and flour, are difficult for your body to digest and can lead to the storage of excess body fat. Because of this, it is best to avoid consuming these foods altogether. However, while avoidance is best, this strategy often will end up failing because most people will end up falling into their cravings and over indulging frequently. Instead it would be better to either eat these foods no more than a couple times per week or find alternatives to the food. For example, for someone used to consuming plenty of ice cream, finding a version of the food that is low in sugar or fat would be better.
