Due to the ever-rising cost of energy lately, many people are choosing to try to become more reliant on their own abilities as human beings. This can include everything from creating your own heat energy to growing your own vegetables in a garden. These are wonderful ways to remind yourself that you really are capable of much more than you imagined. The only issue is usually the fact that often people don’t know where to begin this process or perhaps they don’t have enough time to make it happen. However, in their extra time, anyone can start to make a difference in their life as a homeowner.

One great way to start saving your family money immediately is to invest in a wood burning stove to heat your home. This process is much more affordable and efficient overall. The only thing you have to worry about when you are using wood heat is making sure you have an ample supply of firewood to last you through the fall, winter and spring. When it comes to firewood, you also have to be sure that you are keeping your supply as dry as possible to avoid an especially smoky experience inside your home.

One great way to combat wet firewood would be to build a waterproof shed created specifically for the storage of firewood. Ideally a shed of this nature will be raised off of the ground about six inches or so. This will effectively combat the pooling of water that the firewood would otherwise be sitting in. It is also recommended that you try to choose a piece of land that is somewhat elevated so that you won’t have to worry about flooding. You can choose to make the platform either concrete which is a great foundation or out of wood.

When building your shed, you will want to have a plan for how large you want the structure to be. Often this will depend heavily on the amount of space you have and the amount of room you need for storage. For a firewood shed, often measurements of 6×10 are ideal because then you will be able to store your firewood the long way so that you can organize it very easily. Then, whenever you need a new load of firewood, you will be able to go out to the shed and know that you will have a ready supply of dry firewood.

Often, the cost of building a shed is much less than the amount you will spend replacing your wet firewood every year. There are many blueprints available online that will help you build this shed on your own. These blueprints will tell you exactly what you will need to complete this process as well as how much room you will need to complete your shed. Start with the foundation and work your way up. Your shed should also have a slanted roof to avoid the pooling of water when it rains. Overall, your choice to go with wood heat over electric heat can be a total success if you take the necessary steps to keep your wood supply as dry as possible.

Parenting is one of the most rewarding things in life, but it can also be one of the most difficult. It is one of the major life events that come with little to no formal training or education. People are typically expected to simply follow their parental instincts and figure things out along the way. Certainly, most people will be offered advice and guidance from family and friends, but there are no prerequisite courses for becoming a parent. This can lead to feelings of uncertainty and doubt, but these are feelings shared by most parents at some point.

Bad habits are a common problem that faces both children and adults alike. Finding ways to correct these problem behaviors at a young age can go a long way towards preventing bad habits into adulthood. Some of the more common habits in young children include thumb sucking, grinding teeth and head banging. Stress and anxiety are common causes of these types of behavior, so it is important to try and teach your child how to cope with stress and also to alleviate some of their anxiety with moderate changes. Teach your child to take a deep breath when the urge hits to engage in one of these behaviors or show them the physical damage being caused from their behavior in relation to a healthy part of their body that isn’t being mistreated.

Catching your child “playing doctor” with a friend can be an upsetting and confusing situation to try and deal with. The most common reason for parents to overreact to this situation is because they are viewing the behavior through adult eyes. Kids and adults have very different reasons for exploring their bodies and the bodies of their friends. It is natural for kids to be curious and want to know about things that make them different from other kids. Rather than make a scene or do something that would embarrass the children, calmly explain that playing while unclothed is not appropriate. Take the opportunity to teach them that their bathing suit areas should not be shown, unless to a trusted adult, caregiver or medical professional.

Deciding whether or not your child is ready for a cell phone is an issue that is relatively new to the parenting world. This is one of those areas where you generally can’t look back to your own childhood to see how it used to be handled. Cell phones are a huge part of society and children are no exception. Having a cell phone helps children feel more independent and acts as a status symbol amongst their friends. It can also provide parents with the peace of mind of knowing that they can reach their kids at all times. They can also make them more vulnerable to predators though, so it is important that you educate your kids and teach them about what to watch for. Make sure they understand that they shouldn’t answer calls or texts from unrecognized phone numbers and they should not give out their number to strangers. Set ground rules for airtime usage and text messaging and hold them accountable for staying within the predefined parameters that have been agreed upon. Allowing them to have a cell phone and monitoring their usage can teach them valuable lessons about responsibility and economics.

As unique and different as the issues you face as a parent may seem, try to remember that there are countless other parents out there that have gone, or are going, through the same types of challenges as you. Don’t be hesitant to reach out to loved ones, support groups and pediatric experts for guidance and support in your quest to be the best parent imaginable. No one is expected to have all the answers, but as long as you are not afraid to seek out guidance from people that have already been through the experience of parenting, your experience will likely be much more pleasurable.

Moving into a new house is a daunting task for anyone, but for first time homeowners it may even feel overwhelming at times. Developing a well organized plan before the move will help to eliminate frustration and wasted time when moving day comes. The storage of lawn equipment, tools, or other household items is something which must be considered upon arriving at the new home. It is much easier to create a plan for the storage of such items ahead of time, rather than try to implement one later.

Some families like the idea of an outdoor storage shed, which can be used to stow away items for which adequate space in the home may not be available. These sheds are an excellent choice for things like tools, certain appliances and seasonal items. There are different types of storage sheds available, and selecting one is largely a matter of personal preference. Various materials and styles are on the market, and it is a good idea to comparison shop before making a final decision.

Wood is one of the best choices for an outdoor shed, especially for those living in areas where weather is sometimes severe. Wooden storage shed kits are available in a huge variety of colors sizes, and styles. When first beginning this project, it is important to estimate approximately how much room will be necessary to comfortably store the items intended for the shed. It is better to grab a tape measure and jot down the approximate height and width of the items rather than trying to estimate simply by looking at the articles.
The shed should provide a large enough area to store each piece comfortably, while still allowing enough room to enter the shed and have ample space to access the items.

Some families decide to add the shed as a do-it-yourself project. This is a nice alternative, especially if one is trying to save money. Storage shed kits are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes to make this task much easier. Rather than the daunting chore of buying and cutting lumber, choosing the appropriate nails and fixtures, and the myriad of other considerations when taking on such a project, storage shed kits make the project simple, and hassle free.

Wooden storage shed kits can be constructed with ease by anyone able to follow directions and work effectively with simple tools. Although the project can be completed by one person, it is much more easily accomplished with one or more helpers. Storage shed kits come pre-cut, so no sawing or measuring is required. Almost all wooden storage shed kits come with illustrated instructions that take a homeowner through the assembly process step-by-step. Certain brands also include a video which can be helpful during assembly.

Adding nails, hooks or shelves to the inside walls is easily accomplished with a wooden shed. Some wooden shed kits offer these items as accessories, but if not they can be purchased separately, and the cost is usually nominal. Most kits feature a lockable shed that will come with the lock set partially installed, and additional locks can be added if the homeowner feels this is necessary.

Storage shed kits can be acquired with the paint and finish already applied to the outer walls, which some homeowners find highly convenient. Other options include a non finished wooden shed kit, that can be painted the color of choice once it is assembled. Safety is also important when beginning such a project, and one should have adequate space to assemble the shed without the risk of tripping over materials or supplies. It is also a good idea to get assistance when lifting or maneuvering the heavier pieces in order to prevent injury. The addition of a storage shed will add convenience and beauty to any family’s home, and whichever option a family chooses, assembling the shed will be a fun and exciting project.

It doesn’t matter if you have just moved into a newer home or an older one, or if you have been living at your home for years- it is important to stay ahead of a termite infestation. Termites are one of the very few insects that eat continuously, and can consume about 2.3 feet of 2X4 pine in just one year. When there is one termite colony, there are usually others, and each colony is in constant pursuit of food. Termites cause about $1 billion in damages each year, and are the biggest contributors in home destruction. A colony of termites can consist of over a million bugs, and one termite queen can lay thousands of eggs every day. Prevention of termites in the first place is the best plan to keep them from destroying your home.

Termites need water in order to survive. To help prevent an infestation, find and fix any and all water leaks that are in your home. This includes leaks that are both internal and external. If the termites find a water source in your home that is easily accessible, they do not need to work as hard to get their water supply. With no water source, you have eliminated a requirement for the termites to survive. Additionally, make sure there are no standing pools of water anywhere near your home, either in the ground or in containers. Gutters should be kept clean of all debris. A clogged gutter can leak, which can create a pool of water for termites to gather at.

All heavy growth or unneeded brush should be removed from all around your home. Too much vegetation will create areas that have a lot of moisture, which termites also need if they are to survive. Termites like wet, damp spaces, so eliminating as much of this as possible will help keep them at bay.

Wood is a termites primary food source. Any excess building supplies and firewood is an invitation for disaster, so make sure these are both stored far from the house. Even scrap wood should be picked up and discarded or stored elsewhere. In the event you do not have additional storage, create a barrier between the ground and the wood by using thick concrete or metal stands. Waste and scrap wood should never be buried on your yard, as well. Any dead trees, roots and old stumps should be removed from your yard as soon as possible. Decaying wood will attract termites as they are a food source, and when they consume this, they will look for a new source, such as your home.

Mulch should not be used near your house if at all possible. Mulch is an excellent food source for termites, and when mulch is put outside of the home, it can be just steps away for the termites to get into your house. Alternatives to wood mulch are new rubber mulches, which can be found at hardware and home improvement stores, as they will not attract termites.

All cracks and holes in your home and foundation should be sealed tightly. This helps to prevent an easy access point for termites. Additionally, be sure that your house has proper ventilation, especially in your attic and in any inside crawl spaces. Without proper ventilation, moisture can build up in these areas, which termites can then use to colonize.

It is extremely important to take the proper steps to prevent a termite infestation of your home. It is recommended to have your home checked once a year for the presence of termites. While it may seem an unnecessary expense, an early detection of these pests can save thousands in damage in the long run. The pest control specialists can also help you go over areas of the house you may have missed, and give you other recommendations to help avoid an infestation.

When you have outgrown your garage, a shed is an easy solution to provide more outside storage. Although paying someone to build your shed may be outside your budget, building a shed yourself can save a lot of cash. As this is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project, many homeowners undertake this task with successful results.

Once you have decided to build the shed yourself, the next step is making a decision on free or paid plans for your shed. One way to save even more money on your new shed is to utilize free plans that are available on many websites all over the Internet. If you are an experienced carpenter, these plans may be of use to you. Free plans typically tell you about many popular shed designs, and include brief instructions for building your shed. However, if this is something you have never done before, the instructions provided will not provide enough detail to build a stable and sturdy shed. Even more unfortunately, the plans provided may look very complete to someone without experience. It may not be until the midst of building that you realize the instructions are confusing or incomplete, or that you are missing parts. Even worse, you may build a shed and think that you have created a sturdy masterpiece. You will be very disappointed if crucial steps were missed, leaving you with a flimsy shed that will be destroyed during your first winter. Your saved pennies will likely end up being spent purchasing additional materials to repair mistakes. Worse, you may end up tearing down work you have already completed, leading to an additional loss of time and supplies. In the end, after a lot of lost time, frustration and waste, you are likely to end up purchasing shed plans, anyway. Free plans are best utilized by those with experience, or as a tool to determine which type of shed you would like to put in your yard.

For those of us that are not experienced carpenters, a paid shed plan is a much safer bet. However, you still must use caution before purchasing plans on the Internet. As mentioned above, it is wise to peruse free shed plans to determine the style of shed you are interested in. Once you have narrowed down your choices, it will be easier to look through the paid plans for only those sheds you are interested in.

After you have determined what style of shed you would like to build, it is important to ensure that you are downloading from a reputable website. A useful website will provide excerpts of their plans to preview. This will allow you to determine how detailed the plans are. Obviously, this may not be sufficient for you to make a decision on their quality. As such, it is important that you read reviews on these websites to see what other do-it-yourselfers have to say. A website that receives consistently good reviews on the quality of their shed plans should be a safe place for you to purchase from.

Making a decision on free or paid plans for your shed can be a difficult choice. The frugal part of all us would like to go for the free plans. However, the money saved today by using a free shed plan will likely be spent in the future, either purchasing new shed plans or buying materials for the shoddily-built shed that now stands in your yard. A paid shed plan is the best choice for an enjoyable building experience that comes with appropriate guidance throughout the process.
