What Type of Kitchen Cutting Boards Should You And Should You Not Use?

Choosing the right cutting boards for your kitchen can help make life a little easier and keep your counters in top shape. There are many shapes and sizes to choose from and many people will opt to have a few different sized cutting boards to accommodate various tasks. Having multiple cutting boards is also a good way to be sure that you keep meat separate from vegetables to prevent food borne illness.

The cutting board section of the store has an increasing number of options and the tthree main materials for cutting boards are glass, wood, and plastic. All three have different strengths and weaknesses, so it is important to consider what factors are most important to you and your kitchen routines.

Many modern chefs like the sleek look of glass cutting boards, while others prefer the traditional look of a strong wooden cutting board. Bamboo cutting boards are increasing in popularity because of their durability, but these cutting boards can be more expensive than other options. Plastic cutting boards are typically the least expensive option and can be found in many different colors.

Some people will prefer to have a cutting board that sits out on the kitchen counter all the time for quick and easy access. Others, particularly people with smaller kitchens, may want cutting boards that will easily stack and store in a cabinet. Some cutting boards are also designed to be hung on a hook, saving both shelf and counter space.

The ease with which cutting boards can be cleaned is an important factor for many people. If you want to be able to wash the cutting boards in the dishwasher, opt for a glass or plastic board. Many people feel better about their cutting board’s cleanliness when they can sanitize them in the dish washer. Wooden cutting boards cannot go in the dishwasher and will need to be hand washed with hot soapy water in order to be disinfected and kept in good shape.

Some cutting boards can quickly dull the blades on your kitchen knives. Generally, wooden cutting boards will help keep your kitchen knives sharp for a longer period of time as they tend to not wear on knives in the same way as other boards. This is particularly important if you do a lot of cooking. Glass cutting boards tend to dull knives the fastest and also tend to be the loudest.

There are several different schools of thought when it comes to which cutting board is the most sanitary and therefore the safest option for your kitchen. Some people argue that non-porous surfaces are always safest, while others believe that some wooden boards can naturally fend off germs. While the jury is still out, all cutting boards are safe as long as they are kept clean and in good shape. Similarly all cutting boards can contaminate food when they are not correctly used and regularly cleaned. It is important not to use boards that are worn out, such as plastic boards with deep cuts in the surface or cutting boards that no longer come clean when they are washed.
