Our son lives pretty close but has no transport so we don't receive many visits from him and our daughter lives hundreds of miles away. Christmas is really the only time we get to see them and the grandchildren but I suppose this is what makes it special!
You should be thankful! My boy and his family live just around the corner and we are always being asked to babysit. My wife is just too soft to refuse and always ends up exhausted.
