Default Writing Reports in 2nd grade?

I don't ever remember writing or presenting reports in second grade. My son came home from school today and he has to write a report on an animal of his choice (however it has to be approved by his teacher) and then he has to present his report to the class. Is this a little much for a second grader or is this right on par with other districts?

I remember doing this kind of thing when I was in second and third grade and I am old (30) so I would say that this is on par.

I tutor kids and this is just about right for the curriculum, at least if he's in the US. The report will be probably very monitored and is most likely supposed to help teach him how to do reports.

Yeah this is right on there. I'm sorry that it came as rather a shock to you, but we start things even earlier where I grew up. The earlier they start, the better they get at it.

I think it's pretty normal to be honest. I was surprised when my daughter as bringing home the homework and reports she had to do when she was younger. I believe a lot of it has to do with the no child left behind act.

Mine had to do that last year when they were in second grade. The teachers handed out a form to help the kids so it wasn't bad. They answered a few questions then did a poster board and had to show the class.

Thanks to everyone who responded. He is my first one in school so I don't know how these things go just yet. I was stunned also when he brought home multiplication work! My niece is in third grade and she just started multiplication. I'm not worried about him in math because he is really good at it. He struggles with reading and writing though and gets extra help at school for that. Oh and 30 isn't old at all, I'm 33 but feel like I'm still in my 20's.

I think it would depend on how large and detailed the report is. What exactly was your child sent home with, was there a guideline or anything?

Sounds right on track to me I remember doing it about this age but the focus was more on the ability to research information and record where you got it from than it was about cohesion and grammar.
