Default Cats going where they should not

We have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes. The litter boxes are in the basement (can't usually smell them there). I walked around the basement this morning to clean up around the wood stove (never too early to get ready for Fall) and I smelled cat urine. I think they might be going over in the corner.

We clean the boxes every day and change them every other day!

How can I get them to stop??

Well I'm not sure but maybe you could move one of the litter boxes closer to where the are going or at least try to block it up some? Maybe that will work. They may have some stuff you can buy to spray around there that will stop them. You could check.

I have been spraying bleach but I think the one cat likes it so I am thinking I better come up with something different. I once heard that once a cat started spraying (before fixed) you needed to use 2 chemicals and spray it to the area, so they would not smell their smell anymore.

I think I'll move a litter box over in that area! I hope it works!

Kris, try some vinegar. Due to the PH of it, it counteracts the urine. If you use enough of it you can get their scent out of the area, even the part we humans can't smell.

That sounds like a good start. Moving the litter boxes to somewhere they are already going will help. But place another box or two around the basement as well to tempt them to go in other places as well. Has their diet changed or have you noticed one of them straining to urinate? It may be stones or another urinary problem for one of them and the other will help to mark after they start.
