Default Cats and Wild Birds

How do you discourage or stop a cat from hunting and eating little wild birds? My cat sometimes hunt and eat this poor fellows. I would know that he ate a wild bird when there are some feathers lying on the backyard.

I guess that is a natural instinct for the cats. It is one way to preserve the balance of nature so I do not worry about it. They have to keep the bird population at bay.

That is a nice way to look at it and I quite agree to your perspective.

I just don't like the bad breath of my cat when he eats raw meat like from the bird that he just ate.

Maybe you could look for some teeth cleaning treats for him and give him one of those whenever he comes in from outside. Dead bird breath doesn't sound very pleasant, but I agree with Homeowoker that it is a natural part of the foodchain.

I am not too sure that you really can, its what cats do. My cat seldom goes outside and I doubt she has even left the porch but she does enjoy watching birds from the window.

Is there any reason you cannot keep the cat inside? Not saying you need to, but if it bothers you so much, maybe it's an option?

That's another option that I'm considering but I have trained him to have his poop at the backyard.

I don't know about the teeth cleaning treats, can you make any suggestions?

There is a product called Feline Greenies that is supposed to help with bad breath. I'm not sure if you can get that at PetSmart or if it would have to be ordered online, but giving him one of those every time he comes in from being outside might help.

Thanks a lot Bella! I will give this a try. If this is not available in my nearest pet store then the internet will surely have it. I just wish its not too expensive.

How about putting a bell on the cat's collar. I've done this with my indoor/outdoor cats and at least the birds have a chance to flee when they hear the bell.
