Default Dogs and Babies

What has been your outlook on babies and dogs? I have two mini foxy's who are like my children at the moment. I want to give them all equal attention but am worried how they'll all fit in 'the pack'. I'm working on detatching myself from them now so they hopefully won't be too whiney.

I've heard stories where pets have become very protective of babies.

One example was with a cat - The mother was bathing her baby and the cat bit her, apparently thinking that the baby was being hurt.

When I had my first child we had a little mixed breed dog and I worried so much about how he would feel about it. As it turned out he was wonderful, very gentle and attentive and as soon as she was old enough to drop food he was her constant shadow. When she started to walk he seemed to know not to be so bouncy and mad around her.

I think for most animals it depends on a ton of things. I was told (since after our last child, the dog was new to the family and neither of us had owned a dog in a very long time), to le the dog sniff and/or have one of the child's baby blankets, so the dog can figure out who the other "thing" in the house is.

We have had cats (mostly all cats) and the same dog, all the animals love the kiddo, even the cat when her tail gets pulled sometimes.

I am having a baby in a couple weeks and I am curious to see what the family dog does when she finds out about the new addition. On one hand, I think she'll be good and protective. On the other hand, she can be such a psycho sometimes. All I know for sure is we all need to figure out how to get along one way or another, lol.

I suppose it's just a matter of watching the interaction between baby and dog(s). Whatever you do don't leave them in the same room by themselves for even a minute no matter how friendly they seem to be with eachother.
