Default Hitting an animal with a vehicle

Very early this morning I was driving my other half to work and it was really foggy. All of a sudden, there was a dog running up the road. I did not see him at first because of the fog and I was driving around a corner. Luckily, I was able to slow and weave around him but not before I scared him and myself.

It made me start thinking about what I would have done if I had hit him. I would have stopped for sure, but I would have been bawling my eyes out.

Have you ever hit and animal with your vehicle? What did or do (or would you do)?

I was driving on old back country roads in WV one summer and in that entire summer I managed to avoid countless deer, hit 2 skunks (neither while driving my car, I guess I should be lucky) and almost hit a cow (every see a random cow on the side of the road?).

Thankfully, I have never hit someone's pet. I have, however, hit more than my fair share of wild animals - deer, racoons, rabbits, etc. The one thing I will not do when faced with an animal in the road is swerve. I've known too many people who have ended up in ditches or hitting trees or even another car because they tried to avoid hitting an animal. I don't like the idea of killing an animal at all, but if it's me or them...

I have come around the corner and seen a cow--right smack in the middle of the road. Have you ever tried to get a cow to move? lol I sat there for awhile.

I hit a raccoon many years ago. I was crushed because on the side of the road was 2 other raccoons. It's family! I now either brake or try to go around them.

LOL! Listen to this cow story. I was driving home one morning after doing a midnight shift. Anyone who has worked a midnight shift can tell you, the next morning your grip on reality is rather tenuous. I was driving down the road and rounded a corner. I saw something walking toward me in the middle of the other lane that looked like a motorcycle but it wasn't fast enough. When I got closer, I was shocked to find out it was a cow! I had slowed down until I was just barely crawling. As I passed the cow, I looked out the window and it looked in at me. We both slowly made our way around each other and I stopped at a grocery down the road to tell them about it to notify some local farmer that they cow was out. But it was so surreal to look out that window at the cow and it looked back at me at the same time. I was freaking out at the time but now it's hilarious.
