Default Keeping Fleas at bay

Two weeks ago, I brought my dog in from her potty break and I noticed a flea on her when I was petting her. I immediately gave her a flea bath and was shocked at all the fleas that began to fall off of her. I have another dog and she didn't have any fleas on her so I'm assuming that she got them from the squirrels that come into our yard or the stray cats that come and visit. How do I get rid of fleas that are in the yard so they don't make my doggies their new home?

You can buy flea collars for cats so I'm sure that you can also get them for dogs. Because the dogs wear them all the time the fleas can't live on your dog.

Do you know if there is anything I can put down on the grass to help control the fleas? I don't really want to put the collar on my dogs because my little boy would probably try chewing on it because he's weird like that.

I just use the monthly flea drops on our dog. You just put some liquid drops on the neck and rub it in once a month and that's it. I think you're supposed to avoid petting the dog around that area for a couple hours after application, but once it's absorbed you don't have to worry about chemicals or anything like that.

I've never heard of anything to treat and outdoor area. Fleas multiply so quickly, I don't think anything would be able to do it. If you have carpets, be watchful, your dog might have already snuck a few in the house and that could lead to a big problem.

Thank you Bella! I've heard of the spot stuff but I'm so afraid of putting it on the dogs because I know people who have lost their pets because of it. I will give it a try and see if that along with the flea baths will help get rid of the fleas. I only have minimal carpet so it should be a problem.

No problem, Beeswax That's a shame that people have lost pets. I guess, like anything else, there is a small possibility of a negative reaction.

I think some commercial brands, like Hartz, sell drops in pet stores, but I get mine through a prescription from the vet. That way I know my dog has the right dosage for her size. I use Frontline and I think it costs about $5 to $7 a month. I get the prescription from the vet once a year and then order through 1-800-Petmeds because it works out to be a tad cheaper.

It is very hard to get rid of fleas in the yard, if one of your neighbors sprays for them they will move to another yard. I would try brewers yeast and garlic. You can put them in the dog's food and the fleas don't like it so they avoid them.
