Default Keeping your cats indoors

So I have owned cats my entire life, but I have yet to come up with any completely foolproof method to keep them in doors. They rarely try to get out, but when they do...they can sometimes be so quick about it, that we barely know what hit us. What advice could you give me?

I wish I knew. I'm trying to keep my 2 cats indoors most of the time. The only reason is we have had too many pets hit in the road. Last week the cats snuck threw the basement door when we were putting wood in the basement. We live in the country and they both dashed to the woods.

I like to take them out, but I follow them around.

Stick them in a crate, that is my best guess. Our cat will peek her head out the door, but the only time she has even ventured outside is after a huge snowfall and she was not impressed by any means.

I have this problem as well and was reading up on it a bit. From what I read they say to either get your cat a leash and get them used to it and take them out or to keep them so busy inside they don't want to go out. I am going to go next week and get a cat tower and some toys and try to spend more time with my cat because I just don't see him getting used to a leash.

Cat leashes seem to be getting somewhat popular in recent years, which is something that you don't really associate with cats as much as dogs. Maybe it is worth a try though, assuming that your cat is willing to go along with it anyway. But whatever the case, thank you to everyone for the advice and comments

I can not imagine my cat on a lease. She would freak out. My cat goes outdoors but she sticks around the house. I think cats just have this natural instint for the outdoors. I wish I could help you, but most cats run for the door.

Yeah, I doubt my cat would ever go along with a leash either...but you never know sometimes!

I think it's something they would have to get used to for many cats, but it's easier for some cats than others i'd imagine.

Mine will get close to the door and sniff the "outside world" but that is about it. Now she has gotten her two front paws over the threshold but only when our outside cat was right at the door meowing to get some food.

That's another thing I have noticed as somebody who has owned many cats over the years. You may have this one cat who never tries to get out, but you have another one that acts like a total dare devil, who always tries to get out.

I don't mind letting my cat out if I'm at home, however I've tried to only let her go out during the day. We have foxes in the area, and they've started to be more active recently. The worst part is that she won't come back the few times that I've really needed to leave (usually she comes when I call her).
