Default Nocturnal Cat

My cat is driving me crazy! If I leave my bedroom door open, which I like to do to hear my kids, he comes in in the middle of the night and starts knocking stuff off my night table. How do I get this cat on a day schedule? Someone told me to get another cat for him to play with but I am not sure if that is really the answer.

Another cat may be the answer...or it may provoke him even more. There's just no telling what his response would be. My two questions to you are: one, how old is he? And two, when he knocks stuff off your nightstand what do you do? Typically, animals calm down some as they get older so if he's only two or three years old he may stop as he gets a little older and starts getting lazy. The other thing is that if he is trying to antagonize you in the middle of the night and you give him any attention at all, even if it is negative attention, he has accomplished his goal. I know how difficult it is to ignore a misbahving critter at 3am, but if you don't respond he may very well stop after a week or two of being disregarded.
