Default Teaching kids about pets?

Do you teach your kids about the animal you plan to get them for a pet before you get the pet? Or do you get the pet and teach them after you have bought it? If you do make your child learn about the pet, what time limit do you require they study the pet before you get it?

I don't know, if I think about it I guess we spent about a month actively teaching about it. I did get my kids to check out some books from the library. Still, I didn't really make it too serious since I don't mind caring for our pets.

We had pets before our daughter was born, so it was more like we had to teach them about her, lol. In the future, if it is a pet that she is specifically asking for like a hamster or fish, I would probably just have a talk with her about the responsibility involved in owning that particular pet.
