Default When to spay a cat

We have a kitten who will be 6 months in October. I was planning to have her spayed then. I got to talking to a neighbor who is a vet, not our vet though, who said he doesn't go by age, he goes by weight. He said if a cat is too small they can get brain damage from the anesthesia. He also said that most people won't realize this right away and will just assume it is just normal behavior changes that happen after getting fixed. How do you feel about these statements?

Wow, I did not know that. I believe our Vet here goes by age as they asked me how old our cats were when we called to make the appointment. I have 2 large cats so there was no problem.
