Default Cleaning jewelry

What do you use to clean jewelry? I have a couple things that need to cleaned and I want to make sure I use the right thing on them, but at the same time I don't really want to have to go buy jewelry cleaner.

I read somewhere that you can use toothpaste but I've never tried it. I usually just use vinegar and water to rinse. Those jewelry cleaners are expensive and don't seem to work very well.

Yes, I have heard about the toothpaste too, but I think squeezed lemon juice is the key ingrediant for this, I don't know why though.
