We used to have piles of magazines around that no one had read but the people who wanted the subscriptions wouldn't allow to be recycled because they hadn't read them yet and they were going to get to them. When it came time to renew, I had to put my foot down and make them choose what they wanted and what they would keep up with.

Now the general rule is that if it's 3 months old, it gets recycled, no questions. If you want it saved, you better put it away. I don't find that many magazine lying around now.

I like the read and release idea-- I've started taking my used magazines to local drop offs where they are then distributed to prisoners in jail. I think it's a nice way to reach out to some people, and maybe keep the magazines being read.

I usually clear my name off of them and take them to a local hospital. I give them to the volunteers and they circulate them through the hospital to give those waiting rooms some sprucing up.

Maybe instead of ordering from a catalog you could view the one they have online instead? It seems like everyone has their online shop anymore, and then you wouldn't have to even bother with the catalogues.

I love the idea of taking them to a hospital! That's a great place for gently used books and toys also. The children's wards are usually pretty receptive to those. I hadn't thought of taking magazines/catalogs. Thanks, Fleur!

I also like the hospital idea. I bet they could use them. It is a good way to give back. I wonder if my hospital will take the magazines.

Most of mine don't get read but I keep them because someday I might actually find the time. The best thing to do is cancel subscriptions if you never get around to reading the publications. Yes, you might always find time tomorrow but, in the meantime, your home becomes cluttered.
