Default Preparedness Kit?

Do you have a preparedness kit in your home? Most of the people I know don't, or at least have some gear that can't be called that.

We are working on it. We have enough food, water, medicine, diapers, and toiletries on hand to last for several days if we need it. I don't have like an "earthquake box" or anything like that where I could just grab it and go. We also keep extra clothes, blankets, shoes, water, and protein bars in the car...just in case.

Preparedness kit is usually that what you're talking about. Having a bag with supplies to grab and go is usually called a BOB - bug out bag.

Water is most important thing in this kit. Food is secondary and sometimes toiletries are more important than food, depending on how long do you need to remain in the shelter.

I agree, sometimes all you need is a few hours in the shelter and water may be the most important thing. But at other times you may be stuck in there for quite a while.

My husband and I are very big on being prepared in case of a natural disaster, or even something man made. That said, we don't have supplies stockpiled for any significant length of time. We keep water, canned goods, and other non perishable food items on hand in quantities that would last us about a week or so.

Some people may prefer to make these kits for a specific length of time. For example, most of the disaster kits are based around a 72-hour scenario, which is how long you would probably need provisions for.

Important is to note that survival kit is different than preparedness kit, although these are built and organized around the same goal. Preparedness usually encompasses preparedness at home while survival kit is to be brought with you on various occasions.

I have a hurricane kit. Some may call it survival, as it is useful in any situation where we may be cut off for a while. First aid kits (yes plural), surgery kits, food/water, batteries, emergency radio, walkie talkies, and other items.

There is one bag that holds several different items if we need to leave. It is a scaled down version of the rest.

Been through one hurricane already where we did not have power for about 3 or 4 weeks. So now I prefer to be prepared.

Yikes Jason! That is a long time to be without power and I know you have small children too. We are prepared to some degree for a variety of situations. Right now one of my big concerns is having extra food on hand as a hedge against inflation.
