Default Tiny closet

We have a really small closet in our bedroom. Basically you open it, and while you can see the clothes in front--there is a lot of space on the sides. However, you really, really have to squeeze in to get there. What's the best way to make use of the space there? Obviously, I'd like it to store more clothes, but it's difficult to get them when it's so cramped.

Is it possible to remove the old closet to make room for a new one? When we moved into this place we had a crazy closet where you open a very slim door to get into it, and you have twice the room as the doors width but you can only access half of it. That went away real quick.

I wonder if there is a way to put two closet rods where you say you have space, and eliminate the current one? Then maybe you could double your clothing storage.
