Default Batteries - Helpful or Harmful

I'm thinking whether using batteries, of any sort, is good to the environment or not. What if everyone will use batteries instead of fossil fuel? How much damage will the dead batteries do to nature? I mean these batteries have wastes that is bad even for the soil, which is why there is always a sign on batteries to dispose of them properly.

Batteries can't be any worse for the environment then fossil fuels are. If anything, they burn cleaner air. And you could recharge them using electricity made from solar or wind power.

I agree with you but I'm thinking about the batteries that can't be recharged anymore. Try to imagine the whole world using batteries and no fossil fuel. Where do we dump the batteries that can't be used anymore?
