Default Cellphone ban for US drivers?

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released their recommendations to lawmakers today to ban all cellphone use while driving including hands-free devices such as bluetooth. I hope this fast tracks its way on to the law books. This is the smartest thing I have heard our government considering in a long, long time. Hang up the phone and drive like you have got some sense!

Oh, I hope they do this! Can we make it illegal for people to shop for their groceries while taking up the whole aisle, and having loud conversations about absolutely nothing too? Honestly, I wish cellphones had never been invented. Most people might as well just glue them to their ears because they are always chattering mindlessly to someone.

Are they finally going to do this? Our state has a ban on texting while driving, but yapping on the phone is just as bad or worse. LOL Homemaker...I was nearly run over today in the store by a lady too busy talking on the phone to watch where she was going!

Well I hope they do it. They might want to consider doing it for ones that do a lot of walking and bicycling. I have heard of some serious accidents from people walking and talking and not paying attention to what they are doing. Same goes while riding a bike.

I am whole heartedly in favor of this law being passed. I can't tell you the number of close calls I've had because someone was on the cell phone. People don't realize that their attention is diverted when they are talking.

I hope they pass this into law quickly! MissKitty I would think if you are bicycling on the road this would still apply to you. I can't imagine being on a bike, and trying to talk on the phone!

While I understand the need for this and I am totally for it, the subject does make me question their title of it. It is not actually hands free when you still need to turn the bluetooth headset on, right?

Texting by drivers has got to be one of the worst things that they can do. I don't know why people think this is alright. I also think they should ban eating while driving, putting makeup on while driving, dressing or undressing (coats) while driving, or anything else that would take your attention away from driving. I know people are sometimes in a hurry to get somewhere, but that may turn into a permanent lateness when they're buried.

Texting and holding a headset to your ear are already illegal in California. I am fine with that. I don't care if people use a Bluetooth. It's simple to answer phones and turn them on. Usually you just open the mouthpiece and it turns on, press the button on your ear and it answers the phone. I don't talk and drive anyway so it's not a big deal either way to me.

To me it is a feel good law. A good concept maybe. But how will you tell when someone is using Bluetooth through the car stereo system? What about all those that speed until they see a cop. Will not similar people talk on the phone until they see a cop?

What about other similar distractions. Eating fast food while driving, changing radio station, cd's or tapes? Heck, I still see people putting on make up while driving.

I would love to see stricter enforcing of getting your license and a higher cost to get it, like they do in Europe.
