Default proper aka

I know some people tend to go by their middle names only, disliking their first birth name but is it legal? I always thought you had to change your name if you wanted to sign for it with your non-birth name??

I was always called by my middle name but always had to sign my first name on a lot of things. I finally just started using my middle, maiden and married name. I haven't had any problems doing that and have been doing it for many years now. Not sure how that works for a guy though.
