Default Is Anyone Else Concerned About GMOs?

Genetically modified foods just don't seem right to me and there hasn't been long-term testing of them. Is anyone else concerned about what genetically modified ingredients, which are said to be in most foods in the grocery stores now, might be doing to our bodies and to the environment?

Yes, I'm concerned and after viewing a program about it, it seems we are almost at a place of no return. What's more, all of the seeds people buy are hybrids which often times will not reproduce. The government has heirloom seeds stored in a massive deep freeze vault in Alaska.

What makes me mad is how are we to know that they are GM? Don't they have to label them that they are? I don't want to put food that has been messed with in labs in my body.

Here's a good article about it that includes a list of stuff that is most commonly genetically modified. This is incredibly scary. I buy almost no processed food, but according to this even vegetables aren't safe.

I'm not surprised that the government is hoarding heirloom seeds, but they haven't gotten all of them! There are heirloom seeds available from companies on the Internet. Baker's Creek and Seed Savers Exchange are two of them, but there are others.

It does seem like if we are not at the place of no return, we are so close that it's scary. Baker's Creek tests their corn seeds (I don't know about other varieties) for GMO's. They stated in their last catalog that it's becoming increasingly difficult to find seeds that are free of them because GMO varieties cross-pollinate with heirloom varieties.

I do see a problem with the GMO varieties that spread rapidly, but I'll save most of my worrying for after there's some solid proof of negative health effects. I'm outraged about the decision to patent living organisms, though - the lawsuits filed against farmers whose crops have been invaded by GMO genes are just outrageous.

The lawsuits are really pathetic, especially since the farmers who aren't using GMOs don't even want them in their crops.

I believe research and testing should be done to determine negative effects of anything we eat before it is put on the market for general use. Who knows what genetic modification might do to us, especially when it's in so many foods we buy now. At the very least, mandatory labeling should be required so consumers can choose whether or not to buy foods that contain GMOs.

I read some scary stuff about Indian farmers who have been sold GMO seeds at exorbitant prices and their crops are now failing. Some of them are even committing suicide because of their huge debts. It's all very scandalous.

I read about the Indian farmers, too. It's been a while, but I think the article said that their crops did okay the first year or two and then completely failed. It's really sad.

No, the vegetables may not be GMO-free. Monsanto and other companies have genetically modified corn, soybeans, tomatoes, and other vegetables. Since no labeling is required, we don't know if we are buying vegetables that are GMO-free or not.
