Default Flies

Does anybody have any suggestions for gwetting rid of flies? There are tons of flies in our kitchen actually I guess they are outside and when we come in the backdoor they fly into the kitchen. They are about to make me lose my mind!

I don't know what's going on this year, but I have never seen so many darn flies. My house is like that room in Amityville Horror. Other than those unsightly fly strips, I don't know what else can be done. Somebody told me to keep the trash in my kitchen to a minimum and I tried that, but it didn't help. Once they're in, they're in.

There is a fly epidemic. Under most cities in America there are old and decaying pipe systems. Most of the country needs to have the pipes repaired and resealed. There are only two companies that can reseal per country and they are booked solid for the next 5 years (dad works for 1 of them). Anyway the pipes are decaying and most of these old sewer systems (from the Mississippi east are the worst) the flies we are all getting are coming up the drains. They are called "drain flies" interestingly enough. They are actually very harmless but very annoying.

Here is what I do. Take vinegar (apple cider vinegar if you have it) put it in a jar with a drop of dish liquid then poke holes in the lid. I have about thirty of them around so I have tried to use nice looking bottles that are decorated.

Set ask many as you need around each sink (or anything with a drain). Keep drains closed when not in use and at night put a jar in the sinks. The drain flies will go in for the vinegar and be trapped.

Once they are in they will come from everywhere not just drains but once you can get them out of the house you can find ways to keep them from coming back.

That was a very enlightening post Millie. I think I got one of those solutions from the internet that included some yeast to trap the flies. I tried it once but I have forgotten if it worked or not.

Great tip, Millie. I'm having a fly problem too so I'm going to try your vinegar mix to get rid of them. Flies are just so annoying!

Thanks Millie! I have been curious about this. It seems like every where I go there is a fly issue. At least there are things we can try to make it a little better!

I'm in the UK and we also have a fly problem this year. Ours is related to a waste management site not far away from us here in the countryside and our environmental agency is monitoring them. I'd be interested to try your cider vinegar solution but our flies are normal houseflies so will it still work?
