I don't think there is a long term solution if you want knives that are really sharp. My husband sharpens ours about once a week and that seems to work well for optimum performance.
My knives are not sharp at all. I think I'd cut myself if they were because, although I bought a knife sharpener some years ago, my husband still has not got around to using it!
My mom bought us a knife sharpener. It is a hand held type where you kind of roll the blade through and opening on a slant. It works pretty good. My two brothers are chefs so they have professional sharpeners. Lucky dogs lol. But their knives are a little too sharp for me.
