Smile Sponges

While sitting in the doctor's office today, I was watching the health channel that they had playing. One thing that caught my attention, was they told us not to run our sponges in the dishwasher. But, in order to kill the most germs; you need to put your wet sponges in the microwave. They said to make sure they are wet and to be careful when taking them out of the microwave as they will be hot.

Yes, I do this a couple of times a week. This will keep your sponge from getting all smelly too. Also, after you heat it in the microwave you can take a paper towel and wipe out your microwave and clean any stuck on food off easily.

I never really thought about this but it does make sense for sponges, even though I have not used one in over ten years as our culinary arts teacher drilled it into us that sponges were evil.

How long of a time does it need in the microwave?

I didn't know you could put sponges in the microwave. I'd be afraid they'd catch on fire or melt. I guess that would really kill the germs. I usually just throw them out when they're looking grubby.

This has been a conflict in my family for sometime. My husband loves to use sponges and like so many others I have been told (probably from paper towel commercials) that sponges are a breeding ground for germs. So, I keep throwing them away. It is good to know that there is an alternative.
