Default Tofu ideas

I love to order tofu at my local Chinese restaurant. I decided to buy some and try to make my own. It didn't go well. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I was wondering if anyone here cooks tofu and can give me some ideas.

I have never had tofu ever. I don't think I would like it, I'm a real meat kind of gal. What does it taste like when it's cooked properly?

I am not really a tofu eater, but I try to eat once in a while simply because of its health benefits. We usually have it fried then drizzled with sauce. For the sauce: Saute onion and garlic. Add chicken stock and soy sauce. Let simmer then sprinkle with a little pepper.

The only thing I have really ever eaten tofu in is the hot and sour soup at my local Chinese restaurant. I am not sure how you would cook it at home. I am not a huge fan of it though, the texture gets me every time.

I find that tofu takes on the flavor of whatever food you cook it with. But I prefer the extra firm variety. I find the less firm type comes out too mushy.
