Default Venison

We were given a deer over the weekend. My husband had it processed and we got back a lot of steaks, sausage and hamburger. I’m not sure really how to cook any of it so I need some help! I’ve had venison in the past and it was really gamey tasting. I don’t want this to taste gamey – I won’t eat it if it does. Thanks!

Soak the steaks in buttermilk over night. I learned that trick from a hunting forum...it is supposed to take all the gaminess out of the meat. I have also heard that cooking it in the slow cooker reduces the gamey taste.

Great tips Tara! I have only eaten venison once and I did not care for it. It's great though that you have some free meat. Now if you can only make it taste ok.

Use dry onion soup mix (2 packs per slow cooker) to cook with it. You may want to soak it in meat tenderizer and salt overnight in the refrigerator before you cook it. Take it out of the solution and rinse it well, then put it in the slow cooker with the dry onion soup mix and let it cook over night in the slow cooker. It should be nice and tender and not gamey after that.

The slow cooker is the only way I know how to go, I tried jerky one year and it turned out horrible. I think I need more practice but we are honestly not hunters in this house hold.

I love venison. The slow cooker does work. I wouldn't fix it any other way. I'm going to try Tara's trick with the buttermilk the next time to see if it works.

Yum! Did you know venison is considered a delicacy? It sells for big bucks at those hoity toity restaurants in LA and New York. Of course that's probably farm raised venison. It's like the rabbit you buy in Kroger's. They are all farm raised too and it tastes it.
