Default Plastic Yarn?

I have heard that there is a way to use plastic bags, like the ones you get from Walmart or the grocery store, to make plastic yarn, for crocheting. Does anyone know a proper way to do this?

So glad you asked! It is called 'plarn' (Plastic yarn) and basically you smooth out the bag, cut off the handles , fold the bag lengthwise and cut it into strips. Unfold the strip and you have a loop of plastic bag. Attach them together with a half-hitch knot, and make the 'yarn' as long as you need it. If you look up 'plarn' on you tube, there are a couple good tutorials. And go to 'etsy' to buy some already made if you like.

Thank you so much! I am going to watch the you tube video. I think this will be a really nice way to recycle (or maybe better termed re-use) my plastic bags, before they begin taking over the house again!

Good idea! That would make wonderful outside rugs for the porch. I wonder if you are able to wash them after you have them made? I could also make some seat cushions out of this stuff.

Yes, these are completely washable, although they probably should go into the wash alone or with maybe a towel or two. When I mop the kitchen, I just put the rug into the wash bucket and let it soak, then rinse it off afterwards.
