Default sewing beginner

I want to learn how to sew, but have no idea what kind of machine I should get. Budget is a consideration, so I'd like to get something used. Is there such a thing as a beginner sewing machine or does that matter? I am open to any and all suggestions and appreciate any feedback. Thanks so much! Oh, and feel free to talk to me like I'm five because, when it comes to sewing, that's pretty much what I am!

Busybella,

Keep your eye out for Black Friday deals. I got a bottom of the line Brother brand sewing machine at Walmart for like $50 one year.

You don't need a bunch of fancy stitches so I'd go with something inexpensive like the entry model brother or singer. These are easy to thread and easy to use.

Singer is a great brans - the best one out there in my opinion. I agree that Black Friday is your friend in this case. Wal-Mart almost always has one on sale and it's around $50-$75.

Thanks so much to both of you for the suggestions. I know that Singer and Brother have been around for decades, so I'll check Walmart. I like getting appliances and equipment from Walmart because it's hassle-free to make an exchange if you have a problem. The prices you mentioned sound awesome. That's as little as I would have expected to have to spend even for a simple machine. I appreciate your help!

I can not really help with sewing machines, because I sew everything by hand. I just prefer the natural feel, of hand sewing. I would watch for those Walmart, Black Friday deals, because I always see those deals on sewing machines, too. Do not buy one of those mini sewing machines. I bought my sister one, it works fine, but is quite fickle. Brother and singer are great brands, and often go on sale.
