How old do kids have to be before there is something crafty they can do? And what would be something good to do with a small child? I've never really been a very craft oriented person, but I would like to do some things with my daughter when she is old enough.

We started very young with our girls. I think they were around two years old when we cut shapes into a half potato and let them dip the potato in paint then onto paper. The resulting design was used to liven up the walls of their bedrooms. Pretty simple, but messy enough for them to enjoy as long as you use paint that is safe for kids to ingest.

What sort of thing do you have in mind? You can start toddlers knitting with really chunky needles from around 4 years old and making straw mats is another easy craft which can be picked up fairly early. Tots of around two also like papier mache as it's messy but they all need supervision of course.

My daughter loves to draw. She has been loving coloring since she was 2. We do all kinds of coloring activities with her and that seems to keep her just happy as can be. Always up for new suggestions though!

Define crafty. I have seen kids at all different ages do fun little projects but its when the imagination kicks in that it really gets fun. A friends daughter right now is just at the stage where she lets her toys talk (she fakes it for them), hours of entertainment right there!

We used to take the grandchildren out in the yard and give them a bunch of rocks and some washable water based paints. They got to decorate rocks to use as paperweights for all of the adults desks and some for decoration for the porch.

My daughter has been doing crafty things off and on since she was 5. She's been drawing things ever since I can remember though. She's going through her horse stage right now.
