Default 2011 Totals

Has anyone tallied up what they spent on foods in the last year? A friend of mine mentioned this on a site she visits, the lady grabbed all of her purchase prices and checked it to her savings and she spent about 2k on groceries for the year and saved a little more than that. I am really thinking about doing something like this for the year. Anyone up for a challenge?

No! I am afraid to look and besides I would not have all the records to do this. I don't keep my receipts and I pay with cash for a lot of things. I bet it's a huge number though!

I have never even thought about doing this before. It's an interesting concept though. I cannot do it for 2011 either as I make a lot of purchases in cash too. I am starting to use more coupons and I would love to see how much less I spend in 2012 on groceries then I did in 2011. I should have thought about this sooner.

You could always set up an Excel sheet for this. Just type in the amount you spent by week, and then have another column for how much you saved in coupons. This would probably be interesting to see.

I saved well over $2000 this year at Kroger alone with just my savings card. With my coupons it is probably easily double that. I am not sure exactly how much I spent. I am sure it is less than that though. I only know my Kroger totals because it gives me year to date savings for using my Kroger card on my receipt.

I think this is a good idea. I'm not sure I will be able to keep all the receipts. I might just be tempted to throw them away once they pile up and add to the clutter in my drawer. An electronic record might work for me.

I already know how much I spend on food per year, based on rough averages per month. It's at least two times the 2k mark, but I save money in a lot of other areas, so I'm really not concerned or looking to sacrifice when it comes to my grocery spending.

I can't even imagine spending only $2000 on groceries for the entire year. I spend about $500 a month, I think, so my yearly total would be closer to $6000. I use coupons as much as I can, but most coupons are for unhealthy, processed foods that we don't eat.

I've never done this before but I've been thinking about keeping track of it as well, especially since we dine out frequently. If you're really interested in tracking it, I would suggest you create a Mint membership. (Mint is a website created by Intuit [Tax prep software] that tracks your spending.)
