Default $564 Ouch

We are having our electric box switched and it's going to cost us $564! That includes the labor, box and all fuses! I wasn't banking on this cost!

Why does it need changing? Is there a problem with it? Ouch that is a lot of money but it sounds about right. How many breakers/fuses are there in the box?

Kris, you are lucky! We had received estimates from several electricians to upgrade our service box and the cost was, on average, about $1200! Still, $564 is a lot of money for many of us right after the holiday, so I feel your pain!

Most times when people have to switch them out its an electrical upgrade, the old box was never used properly and they do not have enough spots for what the house actually uses. Is this the case?

Its my cousin who is doing it (Electrician) so I know it's a great deal. I just hate the thought of it. We were only going to get the new shop wired and he came in to look at the existing box in our basement. He freaked! Said it was an old box and could cause a fire at any time. Something about the box would not shut down it would just start on fire if it was overloaded. It scared me and I said go do it! He finished it today! It took him just about 6 hours. He is also going to change the one in our garage and then wire the new shop. I'm thinking the total cost of the project will be close to $2K.
