I know a family member who ended up having to do this right now and her kids do not understand why its being done but they are having a really hard time paying certain bills. While they hate the idea of it how do you explain something like that to a child?

I believe that if you have a close-knit family that they will come to an understanding about it. Make sure that they understand the broader picture before they jump on the single fact that their allowance will decrease.

I think it might help to explain that mom and dad are making sacrifices too. It's not like they're living high on the hog and the kids are being deprived, I'm sure. Family is a group of people ho work together for the betterment of the whole and with that everyone has to do their part.

Maybe the parents could explain to the kids where they are having to miss out too, such as not being able to go to dinner and a movie once a week anymore.

Ours don't manage to get their allowance enough to miss it. That's one of the things we take away for a punishment so they do without it-a lot.
