Default Limit and what it includes

If you give your kids a spending limit for school shopping, do you include sneakers, backpack, etc. in the limit? I don’t include the backpack, underthings, shoes, sneakers or supplies in their spending limit. I know some parents who do include those things.

I personally would include all those things except for maybe underthings as it is still ALL money coming out of my pocket. IMO, all that will teach them to prioritize and budget. So your limit is just clothes right?

I have two spending limits. One is for cloths and shoes and the other is for school supplies. Usually the school supply spending limit is what ever the cost of required supplies are.

School shopping would be a pre-limit set by us for clothes with some wiggle room. Each year can be different so the prices will change as the kid gets older and our household is not all about name brands either.

I'm with Homemaker about including those things in the budget. I think it's a great opportunity to teach about budgeting. The only brand name this household knows anything about is Faded Glory (Walmart) LOL.

I don't let my kids go crazy with shoes and such but I don't include them in the spending limit for clothes. You're right, I only include clothes. My daughter has been asking when we can start.

I'm all for budgeting, but I don't think shoes, sneakers, or supplies should count. You could have a budget for those items too or you could increase the clothing budget by $100 for all of those.
