Default "minute" cell phones

Are these actually cheaper these days or are they becoming obsolete? So many cell phone plans seems reasonable if you are not getting all of the bells & whistles but I still see a few people with these.

I use a Net10 phone and I love it. I can control how much I want to spend on minutes every month without any penalty. I can text, use the internet, and make as many phone calls as I like. If I need more minutes, I go buy them. If I don't need more minutes, I have some to carry over to the next month. I currently have 1600 minutes on my cell phone even with everything I do on it.

I actually bought one of these for my daughter. I can control the amount of time she can be on the phone. We also gave it to her with the stipulation that she let us look at the browsing history and the messages she gets. She's a good kid but you can never be too careful.

Now it is not so much minute phones, though they do still have plans like that, but no contract phones. We are looking for a new no contract plan right now.

I think that pre-paid/no contract phones are known of but most have contract phones. I can see the appeal but I prefer to have a smart phone. It seems like most of the phones you have to buy minutes for are kind of cheap.

Not anymore they aren't Peggy. Tracfone, Verizon, and T-mobile all have the very latest phones available for no contract plans. Now the phones you pick up at Walmart for pre-paid can be kind of cheap, but you can get them from the websites and usually at great prices too.

I might need to look into this a little more and see if its something that will work when my son gets old enough to have a phone. I could see it coming in handy, esp. if I can get GPS tracking on it too.
