Picking what to pay first How do you pick which bills to pay down first? I have several that are very high and I would like to bring down the total amount that I owe, but I'm not sure what I should pay off first.

For me I look at what type of bills they are, are they medical, ER needed (power, heat, water, etc.) or other? It might help to better understand where you are coming from - what types of bills are you needing to deal with?

I pay the most important ones first, those are normally for things I prefer not to do without such a power, water and maybe telephone services. I also give attention to high interest credit cards.

Maybe you could look at what are the most important items in terms of payment deadlines, and also how valuable they are to you. I always try to get my utility bills paid on time, because I cannot bear the thought of not having any water or electricity. Once these are taken care of I will then look at the next most important item to pay back.

For me I pay house, car, insurance and phone first and then whatever else is left gets paid last. No matter how strapped for cash I am, I always pay the house payment first.

What types of bills are you talking about? Of course you want to pay the main bills first (house, car, electric, phone). If you are talking about a lot of high credit cards, then I advise you to pay the one with the highest interest rate first.

House payment is always first because the rest of the bills don't matter if you don't have a place to stay. Electricity, water , and gas are next and then we go from there.

All of my bills are important to me. I always allocate money for the bills every time I receive my salary. If there is an extra money from my allocation, I would save that for the next bills to come.
