I am curious as to how you set your priorities when cash is tight? What are the things that you cannot do without and what do you push out of your budget?
For one I always make sure I pay my mortgage on time (if not early). I then pay the utility bills and then the credit cards. I cut out extra spending like movies out, dinner out, pedicures, etc.
I agree that you need to do what is needed to keep a roof and utilities. Then comes things needed for the kids, and lastly entertainment and things for you.
I think that's the way to go. I pay what I need to pay to keep life going normally, and allot some money for saving. Then comes entertainment, traveling and other things I can live without.
That's how it should go. If after all the necessities are paid and you have money left over, divide it and put part in the bank for emergencies and live on the rest.
Yeah, that's the best we can do, and I think not so many things I can add here. I know that we have to put some part of the income in our saving account, but what about investment?

I identify which are basic and necessary like monthly utilities, mortgages (if any) and cut down on credit spending and other amenities that we can live without.
For me, I prioritize my "needs" before my "wants". Each person has their own needs and wants so I can't specify a thing that should be prioritized by everyone. Personally, I prioritize food and utilities. Everything else will be purchased after I have set an amount for food and utilities.
Mortgage, utilities, other bills, food - in that order. We don't really spend a lot on extras even when we have the money so if times are tight really the only thing we can't do is save. I save every spare penny when there is a surplus to make sure we have a back up plan.
