In our economic system, you can't get around it. You have to have money to have a place to live, clothing, food, and lots of other things. I wonder, though, provided you had enough money for your basic needs, would you choose going after more money to have more and nicer things, or a great relationship, peace-of-mind, and the intangibles of life that money can't buy?

I always believed going after the intangibles is the way to go. Priceless moments and good memories are worth much more than expensive houses and other things that cost a lot of money.

I remember an old Chinese story which relates to this. A girl had two suitors--one is named Wisdom and the other is Wealth. She asked a wise old man for piece of advice. The wise old man advised her to go out with Wisdom because Wealth is going to get jealous and will chase her even more.

I always believed that a balance somewhere in the middle is good. I've never wanted to go after money to a degree that hinders my relationships, but I want to be able to get the things I want. Since my tastes in things are simple, I've never had a problem with that balance.
