Default CA to ban incandescent lights in 2012

Do you think the government has the right to tell us what type of light bulbs to use in our own house? I don't mind going green but only if I want to and not because I have to.

It has happened in other places too. The UK has banned 100W incadescents, though you can currently get lower wattage bulbs. I'm sure that gradually they will phase out others though too.

The problem that I have with government intervention is that it's my house and I should be able to do whatever I want. The other issue is that incandescent bulbs are the least expensive bulbs you can get.

We don't have incadescent household bulbs in Australia any more. We phased them out about a year and a half ago. We just sell the energy saver type, it took ages for me to find the right kind- some were to fluoro and some were to dim. I guess it's a good thing, I don't really mind.

Here in the UK there are a growing number of people who are complaining that the eco friendly light bulbs are not strong enough for people who are partially sighted, but it's now illegal for the shops to sell any other type. Big brother strikes again!

Eventually they will all be phased out here in the US probably. People are interested in helping the environment more than ever nowadays. We have them through our house as well.

I guess I'll be one of those who will go kicking and screaming as they take my incandescent bulbs. The way my eyes are going, I like the brightness that they provide.

Except that your home is on OUR planet, and we have the right to expect that it be kept in the best condition possible. When people won't make the right choices on their own-the selfless choices-then someone sometimes has to force their hand.

Sorry, but we cannot go on trashing the planet, it's the only one we have. You'd be pretty mad if someone mistreated your home right? Well Earth is home to all of us.

There are bright alternatives to incandescents for those with poor eyesight. Spot lights are one particular option.

California is always the first one on these bandwagons. I think everyone here has a point. One the one hand, Big Brother feels more and more invading everyday. On the other hand, Hamster is right and we really do need to do whatever we can to help the environment.

There is a thin line between home privacy and environmental concerns when it comes to this subject.

I'm still in the middle of this one because on one hand I agree that the government should not impose things that I wanted to use. They can tell the manufacturers to create better bulbs and sell those instead of incandescent lights. On the other hand, I'm also concerned about the planet's health. We can see the symptoms that our planet is sick with more storms, earthquakes, and volcano eruptions every year. I think that it is high time for us to consider alternative forms of energy that is environment friendly. Just my 2 cents.
