I have been thinking that composting could be a good idea. How difficult is this? Is this a project I can do with minimal effort? Could this be done at a small scale? What is the first step?

The first step would be to find an area that is downwind a lot of the time because you will be dealing with rotting vegetable matter. The next decision is what you want to either enclose the compost in or keep it in. You can buy tumbling composters that turn out compost in two weeks. If you live in a residential area that is your best bet.

What type of composting do you wish to do. If done properly most will not smell at all, except an earthy smell. Not like your local dumps.

I just switched to worm composting. Going to see how it goes.

I've never personally done it but I've known people who have and it works wonders. I wish I had the time and patience. I've been told that it's really not as hard as you may think. It just takes getting used to.
