I was reading an article the other day about a very remote part of Australia where people live yet there are no utilities available. In order to have running water they have tanks on their property that collect rain water and then filter it for use in the house. Everything is solar powered, but I'm curious about this rain water idea. I wonder what what would be involved in setting up something like that.
Just watch out for local ordinances if you plan to collect rainwater. A city north of where I live cited a man who was doing this because the city claimed the water was belonged to them. It made the newspapers and there was such an outcry that the city backed off.
You know, weren't there some simple water filters out there which are readily available, and are capable of converting the rainwater for you? I ask because I seem to recall hearing about such a thing a while back.
What do you do if you're going to collect rainwater? I wouldn't have ever thought of trying this out. We've been having loads of rain though, so I would love to try it!
My father used to this when I was still young. He would set the all the basins and pails under the rain. After the rain has stop, he would pour them to our water container for bathing and washing clothes. We never had the big tanks to collect much water but at least we save something from those basins and pails.
