Default Green Office

I'm wondering how many people practice being green in the workplace or home office, too. Is there anyone who can suggest some timely tips on green products for an office, or anything that will assist in becoming more environmental conscious?

One of the biggest wastes of energy in an office is the computer/office equipment. I suggest buying those master switches so that when your equipment is off, you can cut power to the plug to make sure it's really off. I wish I could remember what they are called exactly. I read somewhere how much electricity is wasted by printers and other office equipment when they are on stand by, and I was shocked.

I use recycled paper and I recycle all the paper that comes from my office. I also print on both sides of the page. I get my ink cartridges refilled rather than buy new ones, as well.

Using recycled paper, only printing when you absolutely need to, setting your printer to "quick print", turning off the lights when you leave the bathroom or break room, unplugging anything you can when you leave for the day, bringing reusable bags/cups to work...the list is endless!

My entire office is recycled - or close to it. I do most of the things mentioned above, too, but I started by decorating the office with "recycled" items. One of my bookshelves was bought at a thrift store for $5. My desk was going to the trash but the people gave it to us. I have a file cabinet that was being thrown out at my hubby's work.

Using the power only when needed is a biggie, I know many people that work in large offices that still cut the power when they are leaving the office. Why waste something that is never going to be in use for 1/2 a day??

We do all of the above too. In addition, we turn the lights off in individual rooms when not in use, including the bathroom. Instead of refilling our ink cartridges, we sell them to a recycle company and use the cash for office supplies. Our energy manager comes around and night and makes sure all machines are off. If not, he writes you up. We're trying!
