Default Green Window Cleaning

My windows are still getting smeared when I clean them with my solution of vinegar, dish soap, and water. I want to keep it "green" so any ideas would be most appreciated. I cannot use just water and a cloth due to the area I live in and all the dust and dirt.

Hi Bree! I just found a great site-- treehugger.com that has a ton of different ingrediants and recipes for green cleaning. I love it. I haven't tried their window solution, so I can't tell you if it works, but it's definitely worth checking out!

What are you wiping them with? I've been told newspapers clean the best. I use vinegar and hot water on my windows and have no problems. I also use newspaper instead of paper towels. I have to recycle the newspaper anyway so why not use it to clean first?

I use a mixture of white vinegar, alcohol and hot water and it works like a charm. I use newspaper to clean with but it is messy. You get newspaper ink all over your hands. I've also heard of using ammonia in the mixture but I've never tried it.

A gallon of hot water with just a couple drops of dish soap and some ammonia will leave no streaks at all, particularly if you use a squeegee. However, ammonia isn't the best thing for being green so I only use that for the car windows that get the road film on them. I use white vinegar and hot water on the house windows without any soap at all and it works great. A squeegee is best but you can also dry with newspaper (not colored).

The vinegar, alcohol, and water solution works very well for me as well. I use newspaper that I have laying around or if I run out of them I have cloths that are soft and don't leave lint on them.
