Default Making Existing Older Home Green

My neighbors live in an old, two-story home. They have recently become interested in making their home more green and asked me what they should do first. I think working on keeping the heat from escaping in the winter would be the first thing to do. What do you think? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I agree with you, webgeek. I think starting with the windows, insulation, and whatever is needed to keep the heat from escaping is the best place to start. Even if all that can be done right away is putting caulk where the air leaks are, it would help and be a start.

Can anyone home go green? What about helpful tips for those who are not too computer savvy? I would love to see something in print that I could get for my Gram (who hates computers).

Check on the insulation in the attic, or upper portion of the house, and make sure it's sufficient. Since heat rises, that would be the first place I would check.
