Default Roof tops?

I was watching the Extreme Home Makeover show the other day, not sure when it aired but this episode shows some type of plant that you can put on your roof of a garage (any place flat I guess?) that helps to cool and heat the area. Anyone know what this is about?

No, I don't know about this. But we do have a tree besides the garage that covers almost a third of the garage roof. I guess that is enough to cool down our garage roof.

What kind of plants were placed on the roof of that garage? This can be a good idea but I don't have a flat roof.

I've heard of it and seen it. I don't know the type of plant.

Basically, the plants help absorb heat in summer, and the sod that they grow in acts as an insulation in winter. It can be hugely useful.

That is a pretty neat idea. I've never heard of it but I wonder what it is. I'd like to put it over the house roof top. Save on electricity when trying to cool the house. We heat in the winter with a wood stove so I would not need it then.
