Default Sealing up windows

Our windows are not low-e and we really want to make them more efficient for the winter. How would I go about putting up plastic over my windows? What is the best way to hold on the plastic? Do I just staple it? How much efficiency will it really give me? If anyone has any experience with this please help. It's getting cold here and I really want to save oil.

If you're going to put plastic up just use a tape that wont mess up the finish around the windows. Also you want to blow dry it to prevent getting wrinkles all over the plastic. It helps a little.
