We have been pricing solar arrays that could support our electric usage and to go totally off of the grid. I was shocked! The prices are outrageous! You are either going to pay for years of electric usage or pay all of it up front for the solar system that you choose.
You're right, it's crazy. Solar is one of those things that only makes sense if you're planning on keeping your house for many, many years. I would love to go solar, but we just can't afford it.
If you can get it when the Federal Government, State government and local power company run deals, all at the same time, you can save 60-70%. The problem a lot of those deals have gone away with the economy. I would love to get one, but we are talking well over a years worth of salary.
I have also wanted to go off the grid, with solar power, but prices have stopped me. Why is it that everything that is good for you, is so dang expensive?
I have a theory about that. I've investigated it too, and it's way to expensive to consider. I honestly think that the electric companies conspire to keep things like this expensive so they don't lose customers. I know they did subsidize some purchases initially, but I think they got worried about too many people switching over.
I think your theory is spot on, ADS! I just can not understand, why else solar energy is so expensive! I need major energy savings now, not down the line. Plus, if you do plan on moving, taking down all the solar equipment would be a pain!
