Default Water Conservation

Depending on just how much luxury you are willing to give up, water conservation can be relatively easy in your home. Only running shower water to get wet and rinse off, and leaving it off while you soap/lather up, saves water.

Not flushing the toilet after every single use saves water as well, if you are willing to take up the practice. In the Caribbean, as well as in many countries, it is common practice to only flush after going "number 2," since rainwater is collected and is the only supply of water to each house.

Any other water conservation ideas, anyone?

How about while brushing your teeth? I've heard that some people actually let 5 gallons of perfectly good water go down the drain when they leave the tap running as they brush!

That's true! Another thing to think about is how much water a dishwashing machine uses and how much water you could save by doing the dishes in the sink. To save even more water, fill one side of the sink with soapy water and another side with clean rinsing water and re-use the rinswater for each dish rather than running the tap!

I don't know how true it is but I have read that modern dishwashers actually conserve water and use less than what it would take you to wash the dishes by hand. BUT it's best to fill up your dishwasher as full as it'll get.

I'm in to recycling and water conservation but not to the point were I'd switch the shower off, lather off and turn back the water. It's too cold! How about ony watering the garden once a week and not serveral? I can do that!

Wow, I hadn't heard that, Rexi! I can imagine it making sense if you're used to leaving the sinkwater running for rinsing, though. I use the rinsing method I described above, where you re-use the rinsing water, and I can't imagine a dishwasher getting a good job done with less water than that.

I could be wrong, though. Technology these day!

What about utilizing grey water? You can use it to water your garden. Just learn grey water regulations in your area as different areas have different policies.
