Default Add a bathroom

If I want to add a half bathroom in to my home do I need to get a permit? What if I don't get the permit and they find out after it is done?

You should call your local Planning and Zoning board if you have one. If you do, chances are good that you'll need a permit. If you don't have a P&Z Board, you could call your local Health Department to find out if any permits are necessary.

As far as what would happen if you go ahead and add the bathroom without a permit if one is required, that would vary from place to place.

Where I live, if the cost doesn't exceed $750, you don't need a permit. Typically, permits are required when the work you want to do involve the structure of the home. Re-doing a bathroom I think, falls under cosmetic changes.

As for your second question, how would they find out?

Psychic spies? Haha, well probably not but the movie "Men Who Stare at Goats" got me thinking. I will check with The P&Z here because there will have to be a wall taken down and two put up to make this bathroom.
