Default Balcony/deck?

The railing on my balcony is rusted out but management says it will cost $6000 to replace so they're just putting in a wooden one. They're such sticklers for everything looking uniform their neglect is going to mess up their whole look.

They better be careful. My friend was at one of his friends places and because the balcony gave way he is about to win a huge lawsuit against the apartment complex.

That's not good. I wonder if it will be as secure as the metal railing? I would ask them about the uniform appearance of the railing and if it's going to be as sturdy as the other one. Check your lease and see if it specifies any repair specifications.

My lease says they're in charge of repairing it so they are but I'm betting the wooden one won't be as safe unless they have posts going down every foot or so. (If that makes sense). Don't want any kids to fall under the thing.

Update: It looks like a crib. They nailed 2"x4" every six inches and put the railing up to 4'. I'm 4'9" so it's like a little prison for me. They get what they pay for.

Oh my!! That's horrible! I don't know why people do stupid stuff like that. I wonder if they made it so high so you wouldn't throw yourself off of it when you saw how ugly it was?

We replaced our old deck and it was easily 15+ years old, rotted and sad looking. It did not cost 6k though, did you get other estimates?
